Methodism
Methodism is a Protestant Christian religious and social movement that began in the 18th century around the teachings of John Wesley (1703-1791). In Britain, the Wesleyan Methodist Church was established, but several other 'Methodist' denominations developed, including the Primitive Methodists, the Bible Christians, the Methodist New Connexion and the Methodist Free Church. In the 19th century Methodism grew, particularly in rapidly industrialising areas, with the doctrine that the working classes were equal to the upper classes in the eyes of God. Methodists, particulary the Primitive Methodists, took a leading role in the Temperance Movement. In 1907 the Methodist New Connexion, the Methodist Free Church and the Bible Christians joined together to form the United Methodist Church. Then in 1932, Wesleyan, Primitives and United Methodist Churches joined together to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
