17th Century
- 1682: A new harbour and pier built in Cullercoats
19th Century
- 17th March 1832: birth of Joseph Skipsey, the "Pitman Poet" in Percy Village, North Shields.
- 29th March 1847 the first station buit at Tynemouth by the Newcastle & Berwick Railway.
- 1852: Cullercoats Lifeboat Station became operational
- 2nd March 1860: an explosion at Burradon Colliery killied 76 men and boys.
- 24th November 1864 storm: 5 ships wrecked on the Black Middens Rocks, Tynemouth
- 5th December 1864 founding of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade.
- 8th December 1864 founding of Cullercoats Volunteer Life Brigade.
- 4th September 1869: opening of Prudhoe Memorial Convalescent Home in Whitley Bay.
- 10th August 1875: Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club established.
- 14th January 1880: opening of the Watch House for the Seaton Sluice Volunteer Life-Saving Company.
- 11th May 1880: opening of Northumberland Village Homes in Whitley Bay, for destitute girls.
- 3rd July 1882: opening of Whitley Bay Station.
- 11th August 1885; Northumberland Park in North Shields was opened by the Duke of Northumberland.
- 31st August 1898; St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay became operational.
20th Century
- 20th September 1907; lauch of the ocean liner Mauretania built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd in Wallsend.
- 29th September 1908: Dove Marine Laboratory, Cullercoats, opened by the Duke of Northumberland.
- 9th October 1910: opening of the new Whitley Bay Railway Station.
- 15th June 1915: Zeppelin LZ40 (L10) bombed Wallsend, Jarrow, Willington, Haxton Colliery and South Shields.
- 22nd April 1939; Cullercoats Lifeboat Disaster.
- 24th July 1951; opening of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels between Howdon and Jarrow.
- 2nd October 1951; birth of Gordon Sumner in Wallsend, known as the musician Sting
- 10th February 1996; Tynemouth Plaza was destroyed by fire.
21st Century
- 2004: the landing for the Shields Ferry in North Shields was modernised.
- 13th December 2005; official opening of Northumberland Park Metro Station.
- 25th February 2011; opening of the second Tyne Tunnel.
- 21st November 2011; reopening of 1st Tyne Tunnel after refurbishement, with 2 tunnels in operation for the first time.
- 2nd July 2012: Tynemouth Station officially reopened by Princess Anne following a major restoration.
- 28th May 2016: First Green Beans Community Market held in Whitley Bay.
