Westgate Road


Westgate Road takes its name from the West Gate of the Town Walls, one of the main entrances to Newcastle in Medieval times. It is a major road starting in the city centre near the Castle Keep and leading out to the West End of Newcastle. It forms part of the A187, running through the Big Lamp, Summerhill and Arthur's Hill areas, continuing on to Benwell and Fenham where it becomes West Road. There are many notable landmarks on Westgate Road, including Neville Hall, The Lit & Phil, Union Rooms, George Stephenson Monument, St John's Church, 02 Academy, and Tyne Theatre.
