Tilley's Bar, Westgate Road

Tilley's Bar is located next to the Tyne Theatre, on the corner of Westgate Road and Thornton Street in Newcastle. The building dates from the mid 19th century. It was originally known as the Cumberland Inn, then from the 1880s as the Brandy Vaults Public House. For a time, the building was a Chinese restaurant. The building was refurbished in the 1980s by the Tyne Theatre Company as accommodation for players and as a Public House. The name Tilley's was adopted in 1991 in commemoration of Vesta Tilley (1864-1952), who was the one of the great Music Hall male impersonators.[1] Tilley's Bar is on the Local Heritage List for Newcastle.
