Close

Close is a street in the Quayside area of Newcastle upon Tyne. It runs south west from Sandhill to Forth Banks and Skinnerburn Road. Close was an important street in medieval Newcastle, within the Town Walls, and leading to Close Gate. The waterfront was not fully developed until the late 13th century and some land reclamation was made before Close and the Quayside could be laid out in their present form. The Medieval Close had houses on both sides, typically owned by wealthy merchants, some with private riverside quays. In those times, Close led only to open ground at the Skinner Burn; it was connected to the upper part of the town by Tuthill Stairs, Long Stairs and Castle Stairs, which remain today. The oldest buildings on the street today, include The Cooperage, Close Nos. 28/30 and The Quayside bar - dating from the 16th century, and survivors of the Great Fire of 1854.
