Tuthill Stairs


Tuthill Stairs is a modern connection between Close and Clavering Place in Newcastle, providing a passage between the new apartment blocks west of the High Level Bridge. It follows the line of a medieval chare, which linked Close with the upper part of the medieval town. The name derives from Tout-hill, from the touting or blowing of a horn, when lookouts warned of approaching enemies.[1]
