Pilgrim Street

Pilgrim Street is one of the main roads in Newcastle city centre. It runs on from the south end of Northumberland Street down to the Swan House Roundabout and Central Motorway. There is a further section of Pilgrim Street south of the Swan House Roundabout, which forms part of the A186 route, running onto Melbourne Street and City Road. The south end of Pilgrim street was extensively modified in the 1960s, when the Central Motorway and Swan House roundabout were built.

Some notable buildings on todays Pilgrim Street include the Tyneside CinemaAlderman Fenwick's House (17th century) and the 1920's Carliol House; there are also some disused buildings including the former Fire and Police Station and the site of the former Odeon Cinema

Pilgrim Street was one of the most important streets in medieval Newcastle. Pilgrim Street Gate was one of the main entrances through the Town Wall in medieval Newcastle.

William Gray's Chorographia (1649) described Pilgrim Street as "the longest and fairest street in the Town. In it is a Market for Wheat and Rye every Tuesday and Saterday. Likewise an house called the Pilgrims Inn, where Pilgrims lodged that came to visit the Shrine in [Jesmond], or Jesu de Munde, which occasioned to call this street Pilgrim-street. In the upper part of this street is a Princely house, built out of the ruines of the Black Fryers."
