18th Century
- 1759: building of the Church of St Andrew in Lamesley, Gateshead (now Grade 2 listed)
19th Century
- 25th May 1812; over 90 miners were killed by a violent explosion at Felling Colliery.
- 16th April 1831; opening of the Scotswood Bridge (Chain Bridge) between Newcastle and Blaydon (replaced 1967)
- December 1831; the Great Cholera Epidemic of 1831-2 reaches Gateshead
- 29th August 1849; Opening of the High Level Bridge across the Tyne.
- 6th October 1854; Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle
- 1862: Saltwell Towers built by renowned stained glass manufacturer William Wailes.
- 17th November 1868; Tyneside oarsman James Renforth became World Sculling Champion.
- 15th June 1876; the Swing Bridge over the River Tyne opened for road traffic.
- 29th August 1876: consecration of the Church of St Helen, Low Fell (now Grade 2* Listed)
20th Century
- 13th August 1901: opening of the 2nd Redheugh Bridge spanning the Tyne.
- 1903: completion of the Church of St Chad, Gateshead (now Grade 2* Listed).
- 10th July 1906: King Edward VII railway bridge over the Tyne was opened by King Edward VII.
- 29th November 1917: first public opening of the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead.
- 10th October 1928; official opening of the Tyne Bridge by King George V and Queen Mary.
- 1930: Founding of Gateshead AFC football cliub.
- 20th March 1967; opening of the current Scotswood Bridge, which connects Newcastle and Blaydon.
- 9th June 1981; the first annual Blaydon Race run from Collingwood Street in Newcastle to Blaydon.
- 6th November 1981; official opening of the Queen Elizabeth II bridge over the Tyne, by the Queen.
- 18th May 1983; the third and current Redheugh Bridge, over the Tyne, opened by Princess Diana.
- 16 February 1998; Angel of the North completed.
21st Century
- 17th September 2001; Gateshead Millennium Bridge opened to pedestrians and cyclists, prior to its official opening in 2002.
- 7th May 2002; The Queen officially opened the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
- 13th July 2002; opening of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
- 17 December 2004; official opening of the SAGE Gateshead.
- 25th July 2005; the Tall Ships race came to Newcastle - Gateshead
- 21st October 2011; Turner Prize exhibition, hosted at the Baltic in Gateshead, opens to the public.
- 28th June 2012: heavy rainfall caused floods over Tyneside, Northumberland and County Durham.
