18th Century
- 1768: the old Town Hall in South Shields built (now a Grade 1 Listed building)
- 1782: lead miner Jack Bates began living a cave which became known as Marsden Grotto in South Shields.
19th Century
- 10th December 1836; South Shields Poor Law Union formed.
- 1852: Charles Palmer established a shipyard at Jarrow
- 1876: Brigham & Cowan shipyard established in South Shields
20th Century
- 15th June 1915: Zeppelin LZ40 (L10) bombed Wallsend, Jarrow, Willington, Haxton Colliery and South Shields. 17 people were killed and 72 injured in Palmers shipyard in Jarrow.
- 5th October 1936; start of the Jarrow Crusade, protesters began their march from Jarrow to London.
- 1st November 1936; the protest marchers of the Jarrow Crusade arrive in London.
- 24th July 1951; opening of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels between Howdon and Jarrow.
- 1st April 1974; metropolitan borough of South Tyneside formed as part of local government reorganisation.
- 26th March 1997; the smaller stack of Marsden Rock, near South Shields, demolished by explosives for safety reasons.
- July 1999: opening of the new Shields Ferry landing in South Shields.
21st Century
- 25th February 2011; opening of the second Tyne Tunnel
- 21st November 2011; reopening of 1st Tyne Tunnel after refurbishement, with 2 tunnels in operation for the first time.
