Grey Street
Grey Street is one of the main streets in Newcastle and runs from Grey's Monument down to the junction with Mosley Street after which it continues as Dean Street down to the Quayside. Grey Street includes the Theatre Royal (1837), Central Arcade (1906), an entrance to Monument Metro station, and numerous shops and offices. Grey Street was built by Richard Grainger and was the centrepiece of the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle (1824 - 1841). The south eastern side of the street was designed by John Dobson, and the western side by John Wardle and George Walker. The street was completed in 1837 and Prime Minister Gladstone described it as the country's "best modern street". The street was initially called Upper Dean Street, but was subsequently renamed as Grey Street in honour of Charles, 2nd Earl Grey. Grey Street and Dean Street follow the course of Lort Burn - which flows from Leazes Park to the Tyne - it was used as an open sewer in Medieval times, until the burn was culverted (routed underground) by 1784.
