53 Grey Street, Newcastle


No. 53 Grey Street was built in c.1837, designed by John Wardle, as part of Richard Grainger's redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle. The building stands by the junction with High Bridge Street. A blue plaque on 53 Grey Street states "José Maria de Eça de Queirós 1845 -1900 Portuguese Diplomat and novelist of European stature lived in this building 1874-1879, among the most productive years of his writing career." The ground floor of the building currently (2023) hosts Blakes (cafe / bar). 53 Grey Street is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
