42-50 Grey Street, Newcastle

Nos. 42-50, Grey Street was built in c.1836 by John Dobson for Richard Grainger as part of the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle (1824 - 1841). Most of the original facade was demolished and rebuilt in a different style in 1910. In 1969 the building was renovated, removing the alterations and replacing the facade in the style of the original; except for the ground floor, which has an additional floor inserted. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The building was originally built as shops and houses; for many years it was a bank. Currently (2023), the building is owned by Malhotra Group PLC and it is named Malhotra House. The ground floor hosts Graze (bar & grill) and Zizzi (Italian restaurant).
