Church of St Gregory the Great, Kirknewton

St Gregory's Church, KirknewtonSt Gregory's is the parish church of Kirknewton in Northumberland. There has been a church on this site since at least the 11th century. The church was restored by John Dobson in 1860, retaining the 15th century chancel and south transept.[1] A notable feature of the church is the c.12th century stone relief of the Adoration of the Magi, which is set into the wall near of the chancel arch.[2] In the churchyard is the grave of the social reformer Josephine Butler (1828-1906) and the war graves of young airmen who died flying out of RAF Milfield during the Second World War. There is also a large stone mausoleum to the Davidson family; Alexander Davidson (1750-1828) was chandler to Horatio Nelson, he also built Lanton Monument, which can be seen on the nearby hill top.[3] The church is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
