Mosley Street


  • Mosley Street in Newcastle was built in 1784-1785; it was designed by David Stephenson. It was one of the premier shopping and commercial streets of the Georgian town.
  • The original Theatre Royal, opened in 1788, was located on Dury Lane, off Mosley Street (replaced by a new theatre building on Grey Street in 1837).
  • 3rd February 1879; Mosley Street became the worlds first public road to be lit by the incandescent light bulb invented by Joseph Swan.
  • In the late 19th century, several national banks and insurance companies built premises on Mosley Street.
