George Stephenson's Birthplace


About half a mile north-west of Wylam is the humble birthplace of great railway pioneer, George Stephenson, who was born in 1781. The entire Stephenson family lived in just one room of the cottage, which is now cared for by the National Trust. You can visit the cottage and see what it looked like back then. The cottage is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
