"Close up of the plaque on front wall. George Stephenson (1781–1848) was an English civil and mechanical engineer who built the first public railway line in the world to use steam locomotives,and he is renowned as being the "Father of Railways" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stephenson He was born in this house by the Wylam Waggonway on 9th June 1781.
