-
Description
Type : Reprographic copy Description : A drawing of George Stephenson's birthplace showing various figures and a steam train passing the cottage. The caption reads 'The little village of Wylam almost on the banks of the Tyne is one of the oldest and most miserable-looking of all the colliery villages in Northumberland; but also one of the the most famous as the bithplace of George Stephenson the poor collier lad who has remade the worldand who when he died at the age of 56 was honoured by a public funeral and a grave in Westminster Abbey. The two-storeyed cottage in which he was born stands a little to the east of the village itself quite solitary with the railway running close beside it and is practically in the same state as when the great engineer first saw the light within its walls.
