First World War Memorial
The First World War memorial for Blyth (including New Delaval, Newsham, Bebside and Cowpen) was originally located outside the Knight Memorial Hospital on Beaconsfield Street. It was unveiled on the 17th November, 1923 by the Duke of Northumberland and dedicated by Reverend A Tuson, in commemoration of 637 servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was designed by Mr Leiper, the Borough Surveyor, and built by T and G Cocks of Blyth. £2,000 was raised by public subscription to pay for the memorial. It was moved to Ridley Park in 1950.[1] The adjacent celtic cross memorial commemorates those lost in the Boer War (1899-1902).
