St George’s URC Church (former Grammar School), Carlisle

St George’s United Reform Church (URC) is located on West Walls in Carlisle. The building was originally the Grammar School, built in 1832 for the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle Cathedral. It was built on the site of an earlier Grammar School building of 1806. The Grammar School was of royal foundation and formed part of the Cathedral, and so was located within the Cathedral grounds, on the site of the former malt kiln of the Priory of St Mary. The school was extended in 1851; it later became the Choir School of the Cathedral when a new Grammar School was built in 1883.[1] The building was threatened with demolition in 1977, but converted for use as a Church Centre and library ('Diocesan Church Centre'). It is now St George’s United Reformed Church. The building is Grade II on the National Heritage List for England.
