London Road

London Road in Carlisle continues from Botchergate in the city cente and runs south-east, through Harraby, Carleton and beyond. The route was originally a Turnpike road run by the Carlisle and Eamont Bridge Turnpike Trust (established 1752). The former Toll cottage and an old milestone from the Turnpike can still be seen on the road. The turnpike closed in 1883, when road maintenance became the responsibility of the local authority. Today, London Road forms part of the A6 route. A railway station on London Road was built in 1836 and was the main terminus of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, until it's sucessor, NER, negotiated access to the Citadel Station in 1863. London Road Goods Station later replaced the old passenger station. The former Station Hotel stands opposite the station. From c.1900, London Road was one of 6 major routes of the The City of Carlisle Electric Tramways; the Old Tram Depot on London Road, situated near the old Railway Station, is now a car-hire centre.
