Lady Gillford's House, Carlisle

Lady Gillford's House is located on Petreli Bank Road in Carlisle. It was built in c.1829, for John Fawcett, attorney. The building, originally known as Petreli Bank House, was extended in the late 19th century. From 1909, the owner of the house was Lady Gillford, daughter of the 12th Earl Home (and aunt of Alec Douglas Home, Prime Minister 1963-4), hence the name Gillford Park nearby. After her death in 1951 the house was acquired by Cumbria County Council. Later the building was used as offices and a showroom. Following a period of disuse, the building was restored in 2009. Carlisle Register Office moved here from Portland Square and Carlisle Archive Centre moved here from Carlisle Castle; the Archive Centre is a purpose-built modern extension adjoining the House, which opened to the public in 2011. Weddings have been held in Lady Gillford's House since 2012.
