Hutton John

Hutton John is a large fortified manor house, located near the hamlet of Hutton, about 5 miles south-west of Penrith in Cumbria. The manor house was originally built in the late 14th century as a pele tower, with additions made in the 16th and 17th centuries. The manor of Hutton John was the seat of the Hutton family from 13th century until the death of Thomas Hutton c.1628, when it passed to his sister Mary, who married Andrew Hudleston of Farington in 1564 (part of the Hudleston family of Millom). The manor was sold to the Duke of Norfolk (lord of Greystoke barony) in 1787, though the Huddleston family retained some interests in the estate. Alterations to the manor house were made by George Ledwell Taylor in the 19th century.[1] The manor house and adjoining barn are a Grade I listed building.[2]. The estate includes a farm and some holiday cottages. St Mary's Well (NY43992710) is located by Hutton John. Historically Hutton Jon was a Township; in 1934, along with Hutton Soil, it be came part of the new Civil Parish of Hutton.
