Hodgkin Park
Hodgkin Park in Benwell was donated to the Benwell Urban District Council in 1899 by Thomas Hodgkin, a wealthy local banker and historian. The park, also known as Benwell Dene, had previously been the grounds to Hodgkin House. The park was opened on the 8th August, 1899. The park is in two parts, divided by Armstrong Road. The south section of the park was refurbished in 2012-13 to include a new children’s play area, performance area, and water features. Four sculptures were added to the park in 1996. The first (no longer there) was 'Metroland' by Simon English, which had stone blocks from demolished buildings laid out into a maze. The 3 which remain are 'Paradise Gate', 'Metrolands Arbour' and 'Nine Lives' by William Pym. During the Second World War, land at Hodgkin Park was used for allotments, to boost local food production.
