Hartlepool Magnesia Works
Hartlepool Magnesia Works by North Sands at Hartlepool were originally developed by the Steetley Lime and Building Stone Company in 1937. The plant used a new technique for producing magnesia from dolomitic lime (mined nearby at Coxhoe) by reacting it with seawater. The product was becoming increasingly important in the steel industry. At the start of the Second World War in 1939 Hartlepool was the only UK source of magnesia. The 24-acre site was also known as Steeley Magesia, Pallister Works, and Redland Magnesia - reflecting changes in ownership. The plant was expanded in the early 1960s and was producing around 250,000 tonnes of magnesia a year. The decline of the UK steel industry led to the plant closing in 2005.[1] Long after the works closed, the tall 230 ft Steetley Chimney remained a local landmark, until it was demolished on the 29th of July 2012. Local charities sold 6,000 raffle tickets for the opportunity to press the button to blow up the chimney - the honour falling to school boy Jamie Bell.[2] One remaining legacy of the plant is the 2,000 ft long Steetley Pier.
