12th Century
- 1153 Hugh de Puiset (aka Bishop Pudsey) became Bishop of Durham.
- 1160 - 1162 Building of Elvet Bridge.
14th Century
- 17th October 1346; Battle of Neville's Cross, Anglo-Scottish battle fought near Durham.
- 1356 Durham Guild Hall built (Town Hall mostly rebuilt after the 1640 Scottish invastion)
16th Century
- 14th November 1569; Durham city and Cathedral captured during the Rebelion of the Northern Earls.
- 7th May 1585; Great Fire of Darlington
19th Century
- 4th July 1832; Durham University is founded by an Act of Parliament.
- 20th May 1851; The Durham Markets Company Act passed for establishing new markets in Durham.
- 1851 much of Durham Town Hall rebuilt with new main hall and facia.
- 12th August 1871: the first Durham Miner's Gala held at Wharton Park, Durham.
20th Century
- 18th March 1929: opening of the Palladium Cinema, Claypath in Durham.
- 1959: founding of Grey College, Durham University, located on on Elvet Hill.
