Congregationalism
Congregationalism was a Protestant Christian tradition where each church/chapel was self-governed by members of its local congregation. Congregationalism emerged from the Puritan movement in England and the 18th century Evangelical Revival, spreading to urban areas with the Industrial Revolution. These chapels were not part of a larger hierarchy but functioned independently, with each church making its own decisions about ministry, finance, and other matters. However, the Congregational Union of England and Wales was established in 1831, providing a central organization many of the independent and autonomous churches in the Congregational tradition. In 1966, the Union transformed into the Congregational Church in England and Wales. In 1972, the Congrigational Church in England and Wales merged with the Presbyterian Church of England to become the United Reformed Church.
