Cockermouth URC Church

The United Reformed Church (URC) is located off Main Street in Cockermouth. The current church building dates from 1856.[1] (some sources state 1850)  The church's origins can be traced back to 1651 when an independent church (subsequently the Congregational Church) was formed in Cockermouth; the congregation initially met initially in members' houses, before converting a house for worship in 1687. Then in 1719, they built a chapel, which was rebuilt in 1735, and then replaced by the present building. In 1972, it became a URC church, following the merger of the Presbyterian Church of England and the Congregational Church in England and Wales. In the 1990s the church was modified, with the upper level being converted into a function room, and the lower level remaining the place of worship. The church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
