Buddle Arts Centre

Buddle Arts Centre is located on Station Road in Wallsend. The building was originally Buddle School or Wallsend Board Schools (for juniors and infants), completed in 1876 and officially opened on the 30th July 1877 by Addison Potter, chairman of the Wallsend School Board.[1] This was established following the Elementary Education Act of 1870 which provided elementary schooling for the working classes. The school was built on a site close to the recently closed 'C' pit and named after John Buddle, a notable Wallsend figure who was manager of Wallsend Colliery and who contributed to the improvement of safety underground. In 1884 two extra classrooms were built onto the boys and girls wings. Later the school was extended with a science wing, workshop, and 2 prefab classrooms. [2] The school was closed in 1974 and became the Buddle Arts Centre in 1977, which itself closed in 2008 with rennovation planned in 2013.
