West City Walls (main section), Carlisle
There is a substantial section of the Medieval City Walls (aproximately 410 metres long) which run from the north end of West Walls (street) in Carlisle. At the north end of this is the modern Irish Gate Footbridge, which provides a walkway over Castle View road, and connects with the northern section of the West City Walls and Carlisle Castle. Heading in a south-easterly direction, the West City Walls can be viewed as far as Sallyport Steps. This section of the City Walls is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England. The wall continues beyond the Sallyport Steps, but is concealed by buildings (nos. 10-22 West Walls) then another stretch of the wall (site of the former Crown Plaza Hotel). There is a great view of the West City Walls from the footpath by the Town Dyke Orchard carpark.
