Section of West City Walls at site of former Central Plaza Hotel, Carlisle

There is a section of the 12th century City Walls by West Walls (street) in Carlisle, located between 22 Backhouse Walk and Victoria Viaduct. Previously, this section of the City Walls had been truncated and incorporated into a late 19th century hotel and stables. The Central Plaza Hotel was demolished, but the city walls were retained. This section of the City Walls is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.

Great Central Hotel on West Walls (street) was built in 1880, incorporating a section of the Medieval City Walls. Later the hotel was renamed as the Central Hotel and then The Central Plaza Hotel. The hotel was taken under the State Management Scheme from October 1916 until 1973. After a period of decline, the hotel closed in October 2004 and the building fell into dereliction. Its exterior was covered in scaffolding for several years before the building was demolished in 2020. The hotel had been a listed building, primarily to protect the section of the City walls here.
