Waverley Viaduct, Carlisle

Waverley Viaduct (aka Engine Lonning Bridge) is a disused railway bridge over the River Eden in Carlisle. The viaduct was built in 1861 for the North British Railway Company, on the former Carlisle to Edinburgh line. The bridge is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. It is likely that Milecastle 67 of Hadrian's Wall was located to the south of the bridge, and thought to have been destroyed during it's construction. Roman coins were found here in 1861 when the railway cutting was being made. Today, Hadrian's Wall Path and Cycleway follow the south banks of the River Eden and pass close to the bridge.
