Vickers, Vickers-Armstrong, BAE - Barrow-in Furness
- The Devonshire Dock in Barrow-in-Furness was developed by the Furness Railway for shipping iron ore, and was officially opened on the 19th of September, 1867.
- The Iron Shipbuilding Company was founded in 1870 by James Ramsden (Managing Director of the Furness Railway) and soon renamed as the Barrow Shipbuilding Company. This marked the beginning of large-scale shipbuilding here, which was an important factor in the growth and development of Barrow. The company's first ship was the steam yacht Aries, launched in May 1873. It's first steam-driven submarine was the Nordenfelt I, launched in 1886.
- In 1897, the company was renamed Vickers Son & Maxim, and it became known for building large warships, receiving international orders from countries including Japan and Russia.
- Vickerstown on Walney Island was established in c.1901 to house workers of the expanding company.
- The company was renamed Vickers Ltd in 1911 after Sir Hiram Maxim retired from the board. That same year, the company also expanded into aircraft manufacturing (initially building airships to compete with German zeppelins).
- In 1927 the company merged with Armstrong-Whitworth to create the conglomerate Vickers-Armstrong, with major shipyards in Barrow and on the Tyne.
- Along with other shipbuilders, the shipyard, was nationalized in 1977, to become part of British Shipbuilders.
- In 1986, the Barrow shipyard was privatised and sold to an employee-led consortium to become VSEL (Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd).
- Following a series of takeovers and mergers, including one with G.E.C. and its Marconi Electronic Systems business, in 1999, VSEL became part of BAE (British Aerospace Ltd). Today, the shipyard is known as BAE Systems Submarines.
