This 'Castle' Was Actually Something Far Stranger!

  • Description

Hidden in a quiet valley in Northumberland stands a ruin that confuses almost everyone who sees it. With its tall stone walls and enormous arches, the structure looks uncannily like a medieval fortress. Travellers passing through the Ridsdale Valley often assume it must have been a castle. But the records tell a different story. No battles were fought here. No fortress was ever built in this valley. So what is this mysterious building? Why was something this large built in such a remote place? What purpose did it serve? And how did this peaceful valley briefly become part of Britain’s rapidly changing industrial landscape? Join me as we explore one of Northumberland’s most unusual historical ruins and uncover the story hidden within its towering stone walls.
