Ushaw College
From 1808 up to 2011 Ushaw College was a major seminary for the training of Roman Catholic priests. It rehoused the Roman Catholic 'English College' (Douai), founded in 1568, which had been based in France, but forced to leave there in 1795 following the French Revolution. Originally know as the College of St. Cuthbert, it took in its first residents on 19th July 1808. Ushaw College is now belongs to Durham University. It is open to visitors and represents the largest concentration of buildings, archives, books, art-works, and other artefacts related to the history of Catholicism in the North of England.
