The Cross Keys Temperance Inn

The Cross Keys Temperance Inn is located in Cautley, on Cautley Road (A683), about 4 miles north-east of Sedbergh and 9 miles south-west of Kirkby Stephen. It is situated by the River Rawthey, and is close to the footpath that leads to Cautley Spout, which is England's highest waterfall. The inn was originally a farmhouse known as High Haygarth. The earliest records show a Thomas Bland as the occupant here in 1619. It became an inn somethime after Cautley Road was re-routed to run past the building in 1819.[1] The Cross Keys became a Temperance Inn in 1902, following the tradgic drowing of the landlord in the River Rawthey. In 1949 it was bequethed to the National Trust and is still run as a Temerance Inn, serving food (but not alcohol) and providing vistor accommodation. The Cross Keys is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
