The statue is a prominent landmark on Main Street in Cockermouth. It is a white stone statue of the sixth Earl of Mayo, who was MP for Cockermouth from 1857 to 1867. In 1869 he was appointed to the post of Viceroy to India, where he served until he was murdered in the Andaman Islands in 1872. The statue was erected in 1875, designed by W & T Wills of London.
