St Mary's Park, Stannington

St Mary's Park (aka Stannington Park) is effectively a new village, built on and around the site of the former St Mary's Hospital, located near North Saltwick and about 2 miles north-west of the village of Stannington in Northumberland. The site was originally farm land belonging to West Duddo Farm, which was purchased at £31 per acre in 1909, to build Gateshead Borough Lunatic Asylum (later renamed St Mary's Hospital).[1] St Mary's Hospital closed in 1995. There have been housing developments on the site, including 'Stannington Park' and 'Stannington Mews'. Thirty four former staff houses, known as 'The Villas' remained and are now private residences. St Mary's Inn, which opened in 2015, is the converted administrative block of the former hospital. The former hospital chapel was converted to become St Mary's Village Hall. The Rivergreen Centre is an office/conference centre developed here. The grounds of the former hospital, designed by George T Hine, are a listed park and garen on the National Heritage List for England. St Mary's Park is part of Stanington Civil Parish. Catraw Burn flows by the settlement.
