Sandgate
Sandgate is a street next to the Quayside in Newcastle. The street developed in medieval times, taking it's name from the Sand Gate on the Newcastle Town Walls. The section of the town walls here and the gate were taken down in 1798 to improve access. In the 18th century the area around Sandgate was populated by Keelmen and the Milk Market was held in an open space at the western end of the street. By the 19th century, Sandgate had developed to include several beer-houses, lodging houses and shops. Many hundreds of people, particularly those who worked on the River Tyne, lived in the area. Off Sandgate, there were several chares (including The Swirle) and narrow alleys, known as 'entries', including Sellars Entry, Addys Entry, Chapel Entry, Spencer's Entry and Wrangham's Entry. There were houses, including some of wooden construction, along the alleys. By the late 19th century these alleys were described as dark and dingey; "crowded with the miserable dwellings of the very poor".[1] Sandgate, and the wider Quayside area, was redeveloped in the 1990s - the layout is much changed from the Medieval street, but some of the historic names have been re-used (including The Swirle, Spencer's Entry and Wrangham's Entry).
