Railway Inn, London Road, Carlisle

The former Railway Inn is located at No. 104, London Road in Carlisle. It was originally built in 1837 as the Station Hotel to serve passengers of the London Road Station, which was the western terminus of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway. It was referred to as the "new" Railway Hotel in the Carlisle Journal in 1837. However, the passenger station closed in 1863 after North Eastern Railways negotiated access to Carlisle Citadel Station. The passenger station became the London Road Goods Station. At one time the inn had an attached bowling green, shown on the 1842 Map of Carlisle.[1] The Railway Inn was one of the first pubs acquired by the Government in July 1916 under the State Management Scheme, it returned to private ownership under Greenalls in c.1973. The former Railway Inn is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The pub closed in 2005 and in 2021 planning permission was granted to convert the building into flats.
