Port Carlisle

Port Carlisle is a coastal village on the Solway Firth in Cumbria, located about 1 mile east of Bowness-on-Solway and 10 miles north-west of Carlisle. It was originally a small settlement called Fisher's Cross, but was transformed into a bustling port in the 19th century as the sea outlet for the Carlisle Canal, which opened in 1823. The canal was built to connect Carlisle with Liverpool, Scotland, and Ireland. In 1854, the canal was replaced by a railway which used the canal bed for most of its route to Port Carlisle. However, the port here later declined due to silting and competition from the deeper docka at Silloth. Port Carlisle retains historic features, including the old quay, Georgian and Victorian buildings, and remnants of the old canal. The village is on the Hadrian's Wall Path and cycle route. Port Carlisle is part of Bowness Civil Parish and is in the Cumberland Council area.
