Old Low Light

The Old Low Light is a heritage centre and cafe located at the Fish Quay in North Shields. It was originally built as a lighthouse in 1727-1733, within the walls of Clifford's Fort. In conjunction with the Old High Light, the lighthouse provided ships with the means to safely navigate the mouth of the Tyne, by lining up the two lights, to avoid the treacherous Black Middens rocks. There was an earlier lighthouse here, built in 1539 after King Henry VIII granted a charter, in 1536, to the Blessed Holy Trinity (aka Trinity House, Newcastle upon Tyne) to build and fortify two navigation lights at North Shields. The Low Light building was raised in 1775. It became redundant as a lighthouse on completion of the New Low Light in 1808. The building has been substantially modified and used for different purposes over the years. It was converted to almshouses in 1830. Later it was used as a warehouse and cold store. Then it became a training centre for the Deep Sea Fisheries Association and subsequently recently for the Maritime Service Volunteers, who left in 2011. Through the efforts of local volunteers, supported by North Tyneside Council, the Old low Light was opened in 2015 as a Heritage Centre, social space and cafe. The Old Low Light is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
