Nos. 161-163 Botchergate

Nos. 161-163, Botchergate, hosts the Carlisle Taekwon-do Centre. The Art-Deco style building originally opened on the 9th July 1935 as the Earl Grey public house. Designed by Harry Redfern, it was built by J & R Bell for the Carlisle State Management Scheme to replace an older establishment of the same name, which dated from c.1837 and had been taken over by the Scheme in 1916.[1] The public house was later renamed The Jester. The pub closed in the mid 2000's. The taekwondo school, which had been founded in 1997, later moved into the building. The building stands on the corner of Botchergate and Rydal Street. On the Rydal Street side, the letters "EWS" can still be seen painted on the walls of the building. This dates from the Second World War, and stands for "Emergency Water Supply", to be used by firefighters if the main supply was damaged by air raids.[2]
