Morton, Nunthorpe

Morton Grange and Morton Carr are farms, located to the east of Nunthorpe. There are also a couple of cottages and MW Vehicle Services located by Morton Carr level crossing over the Middlesbrough-Whitby railway line. Morton Carr Lane runs from Guisborough Road in Nunthorpe south easterly towards Morton (now disected by the Nunthorpe Bypass). Historically, the area was Morton township in the ancient parish of Ormesby and the North Riding of Yorkshire. Today, they are within the Redcar and Cleveland Council area. The placename "Morton" derives from Old English meaning "moor farm" or "town on the moor". "Carr" derives from the Old Scandinavian word "kjarr", meaning a flat marshy area or bog, and possibly linking back to Viking settlers in the area in the distant past.

Not to be confused with Morton Grange Township (Houghton-le-Spring parish) or Morton Palms Township (Haughton-le-Skerne parish) or Morton Tinmouth (Gainmouth Parish).

Morton Carr Farm (Morton Grange Farm to the east of this).
