In the churchyard of St Michael's Church in Stanwix, is a monument to the 5 children of Dean Tait, who died within weeks of each other of smallpox in 1856. Dean Tait was a prominent Broad Churchman who became Bishop of London in 1856, and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1868; he died in 1882.[1] The monument is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. It stands on what was the slope of the south ditch of the Roman fort, which once stood here. There is also a memorial window to the children in St Wilfrid's Chapel within Carlisle Cathedral
