Market Cross

The Market Cross is located in the Market Place in Alston. It was first erected in 1764. The Market Cross was rebuilt in 1883, but taken down and re-erected in 1970 and again in 1981. A panel with the original inscription is now located in the Parish Church: "This Market Cross was erected by The Right Honourable SR WILLIAM STEPHENSON Kn born at Cross Lands in this Parish and elected LORD MAYOR OF LONDON 1764". The Markety Cross is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
