Transcribed by Simon Cotterill, Newcastle University. Presented to be discoverable for a modern audience, not faithful to formatting and layout of the original directory. Abbreviations have been extended (e.g. "st" to "street", "Robt." to "Robert").

Note: some links to extant buildings have been added, though it is not always certain that these relate to those listed in the 1855 directory. Some, like the Collingwood Arms in Brandling Village are certain matches. Others are less certain, like the Assembly Rooms, assumed to be what was once known as Assembly House, rather than the Old Assembly Rooms. Others, like The Punch Bowl, were later rebuilt on the same site as the original listed here; some may even have moved location within the same street, or beyond. Some, like the Cradle Well, are sadly no longer public houses.
