Headland Conservation Area
The Headland Conservation Area in Hartlepool includes the historic core of the town, featuring a mix of medieval to Victorian maritime architecture. The Headland (a coastal peninsula) was the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery founded by St Hilda around 647 AD.
The conservation area includes the 12th-century St Hilda’s Church, Sandwell Gate (remnant of medieval town walls), and the Heugh Battery. The area is characterized by narrow streets, Victorian houses, and maintains a strong maritime atmosphere, providing extensive views of the coast, with the Heugh Lighthouse and promenade.
The conservation area was designated in 1969 and in 2007 it's boundaries were changed to include the Heugh Breakwater. The conservation area is managed by Hartlepool Borough Council and the designation ensures that any changes to the area, such as building alterations, maintain or enhance its unique character.
