Hardknott Roman Fort

The well-preserved remains of Hardknott Roman Fort (Mediobogdum) are  located about 5 miles east of the village of Eskdale Green in Cumbria. It was built in the 2nd-century to guard the Roman road from Ravenglass to Ambleside, passing through Hardknott Pass. The fort housed 500 Dalmatian (who were recruited from what is now Croatia) soldiers. The fort covers 1.3 hectars, and it's remains are notable for well-preserved foundations of granaries, headquarters, commandant's house, barracks, a bathhouse, and the finest surviving Roman parade ground in Britain. The remains of the fort and bath house are a Scheduled Monument, and are under the care of English Heritage.
