Great North Road, Newcastle
The Great North Road was the principle road from London to Edinburgh, before the modern A1. Sections of the road in Newcastle are still named or referred to as the Great North Road, including the road across Town Moor. It includes Gosforth High Street and the B1318 route going north. In 1747, the Cow-Causey and Buckton-Burn Turnpike Trust was established, improving and maintaining the Great North Road from Cow-Causey (near Newcastle) to Buckton Burn (to the north of Belford). The Trust continued until 1875. The historic Great North Road was designated as the "A1" in 1921, when the Ministry of Transport introduced a new road numbering system. Before the A1 Western Bypass opened in December 1990, the A1 (Great North Road) passed directly through the centre of Newcastle, including Northumberland Street and Pilgrim Street. The old A1 route crossed the Tyne via the Swing Bridge before the Tyne Bridge opened in 1928.
