Laing Memorial Fountain, Great North Road

The Laing Memorial Fountain is located by the Bluehouse Roundabout, at the west end of Jesmond Dene Road, at it's junction with the Great North Road. The monument was erected in 1895, in honour of William Laing, a founder of the Tyne Steam Shipping Company and a Temperance reformer. The location of the memorial relates to Laing's role as founder of the Temperance Festival on the nearby Town Moor, held for the first time in 1882, and forerunner of todays annual Hoppings fair. The monument is on the Local List of buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest ('Local List') for Newcastle.

Erected by the widow of the late William Laing of Newcastle and Gosforth in affectionate remembrance of his lifelong interest and kindness to all dumb animals. 1895.
